Your changing pad. The most-used item in your baby registry! In the first year alone, you’ll change about 2,500 diapers! You’ll change the vast majority of these diapers while your baby is lying on a changing pad. So naturally, you want your little one to be nice and comfortable! But how exactly do you use a changing pad? We’ll explain it in this blog.
Where should you place a changing pad?
You usually place your changing pad on the changing table in the nursery. It’s also possible to place the changing pad on the floor, on the bed, or on the couch. But from an ergonomic standpoint, it’s naturally best to place it on the changing table. You can do this in two ways: across the width of the table, or—if you use a table top extension—along the length of the table. The advantage of placing the changing pad widthwise is that you don’t need to buy a tabletop extender and that the dresser can be placed against the wall. The advantage of placing the changing pad lengthwise is that it makes it a bit easier for you as a parent to change your baby; you no longer have to twist your body. That’s also better for your back.
What should you look for when buying a changing pad?
There are a few key factors to consider when choosing a changing pad to ensure your little one is comfortable. First, it’s important that the changing pad has raised edges so your baby can’t roll off it. Size is also important, as the changing pad should ideally fit on the changing table. That’s why a size of 70 cm long by 50 cm wide is ideal. It’s also important that your child can lie securely on the changing pad. The material and thickness are key factors here. Most changing pads are about 10 cm thick. In terms of material, cotton, standard foam filling, or PU comfort foam are good choices. The outer layer of the changing pad is often made of a water-repellent material. This can be somewhat slippery and feel cold to a baby, which may cause babies to cry more easily. That’s why Cuddl offers a heated changing pad for you.
